Feeding Our Brothers and Sisters

“The day that hunger is eradicated from the earth, there will be the greatest spiritual explosion the world has ever known.  Humanity cannot imagine the joy that will burst into the world on the day of that great revolution."
--Federico Garcia Lorca,
Spanish poet 1899-1936

Home Cooked Meals for the Homeless

The Essene Church of Peace has been serving home-cooked hot vegetarian meals to Washington D.C.’s homeless population since 2008. About 80 men, women, and children come every Sunday.

How We Do It?
Volunteers meet every Sunday every week of the year to prepare food starting at 7:30 a.m. then go downtown to serve at 10:30. Help in the kitchen, and donations of food and supplies are most welcome!

Feed-Back
Do our brothers and sisters like the food? Oh yes! Smiling eyes, helpful hands that hurry to help set-up, and grateful voices tell us how the food makes them feel healthy. They look forward to it, and tell us “Keep Coming Back!”

Peace cannot exist without Social Justice, nor Social Justice while there is hunger. We cannot hope for Peace and do nothing about it. Is it possible to call ourselves human beings when we refuse to take responsibility for our brothers and sisters around the world who are dying of starvation? Can’t we do something about it?  Aparigraha: a New Economic Paradigm for a Culture of Peace, a project of Global Coalition for Peace (GCFP), presents the case for an agricultural based society, where meeting the basic needs of all human beings without exception takes priority. Unless this becomes an outcry and the majority asks for it we will not have peace for our children or future generations. It may take some time to get to that point of social maturity, but in the meantime we need to act.

Sattwic Peace Gardens and Spiritual Food CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) are two projects that are putting these principles to work. We need to raise our level of consciousness and realize that a form of agriculture that respects nature is our road to Peace. The One Law, the Law of Love, must be the source of all our actions if we really want World Peace.  The poor are not the only ones who suffer from malnutrition. Rudolf Steiner gave the method and homeopathic remedies to heal the soil. He predicted in 1924 that terminal diseases would be rampant in humanity unless we heal the soil, the source of our nourishment.
